Tips For Collecting Horse Racing Memorabilia
Collecting Horse Racing Memorabilia is a popular hobby with a long tradition in the U.K. where it has it’s roots in Newmarket which the British call the HQ of racing.
Recent history tells us that horse racing memorabilia has increased from being a hobby for young adults into an adult-oriented hobby, which in today’s society is known to support a multi-million dollar industry.
It can often be complex enough and it can also be rather scary for the ardent sports fan that is about to get started.
Here are five tips that every beginner should be aware of:
1. Do not just do it for the money.
Horse racing memorabilia is a huge business but it is not such an easy hobby to make money at. If you think you are going to make a quick buck at this or perhaps want to invest long term, then I am sure there are other ways to invest your money and time.
Many collectors loose in the financial sense, but if you are in it for the sheer love of the sport and the memorabilia you want to collect then you cannot loose.
2. Follow your fancies not the trends.
Some collectors usually spend a large portion of their money and time chasing the latest trend or craze, but the sheer nature of this hobby is that time is fast moving and so are interests, so if you chase a craze or trend you could possibly find yourself with an unwanted, worthless item.
But if you are truly passionate and base your buying decision on your personal preference then your items will always be of a special value to you.
3. Only buy authenticated horse racing memorabilia.
Horse racing memorabilia is a big business and the nature of this hobby attracts many non-reputable dealers who are just waiting to take your money.
There is a wide range of authentic services available today so be sure to use them, as you do not want to get stung by an unauthentic item.
Some sites such as E Bay will offer unbelievable deals but avoid such items, as they are not what they seem!
4. Carry out your research.
The research for items is what most collectors regard as one of the joys of this hobby as this part of the hobby can and is educational and informative and without the research such history etc would not have been discovered or experienced.
At some point in our lives we have all been subject to that impulse buy, but that obvious deal is best missed rather than buy a high priced item without doing the research beforehand.
5. Spend the time and money to preserve your collection.
Most collectors are prepared to spend huge amounts of money for those special items but they forget the importance of materials and casings needed to preserve those items.
Keep a note of your spending for your hobby and remember to put some extra aside for the all important casings or materials needed to keep you items preserved for the future so they will last for centuries and perhaps one day be passed down to future generations.
